Chalk Hill Estate Bottled Merlot 2006
At Chalk Hill, their small production Merlot has a soft yet elegant structure that is created in their Sonoma County vineyards through low yields, abundant sun exposure, canopy management and hang time.
For the 2006 Chalk Hill Merlot, five different clones of the Merlot grape contribute to the final blend and the addition of 20% Malbec adds texture, complexity and dark fruit. This wine presents a balance between ripe Merlot fruit and a site-specific earthiness.
Aromas of summer brush, huckleberry, eucalyptus and a slight smokiness are matched on the palate with violets, blueberry fruit, milk chocolate and moist earth.
"An exquisite Merlot that really impresses for balance and complexity, and not just its ability to ripen grapes, which anyone can do. Shows deep flavors of cherry puree, mocha, cedar and Asian spices, wrapped into finely ground, sweet tannins. A rewarding red wine for drinking now with upscale fare" -- Wine Enthusiast, 92 points
